How to diagnose an error?
BMW error diagnosis technology with OBD1 systems:
On a car with the ignition on, the gas pedal is squeezed five times over five seconds.
On the dashboard, when the test starts, the “Check Engine” indicator will light. The light will turn on for five seconds, and then turn off for half a second.
Then the indicator will turn on again for 2.5 s, and after a pause of 2.5 seconds it will start displaying trouble codes.
The most accurate options for checking a BMW car are using a computer or a diagnostic scanner. But to implement this method, the user needs to prepare in advance special equipment for testing or a laptop with software installed on it.
The algorithm of actions during testing using a tester or a computer:
The user connects the computer to the diagnostic output in the car.
The ignition is activated and the engine is started.
The laptop runs the software. If a scanner is used for verification, it must be turned on.
The testing process begins. Depending on the vehicle model, the firmware version of the control unit and the laptop program, or the scanner version, the procedure can take from several minutes to an hour.
Upon completion of the verification process, a list of errors found in the operation of the BMW car will appear on the screen of the laptop or tester. The user needs to decrypt these codes and, in accordance with the information received, repair the units and assemblies. After the vehicle is restored to serviceability, the fault combinations are deleted from the control unit memory.
Dashboard test for cars E36 1992-1999 years of release:
On the control panel, the daily mileage reset key installed on the odometer is pressed and held.
In the ignition switch, the key is turned to position I. On the dashboard screen, an inscription will light up indicating the beginning of the test - Test 01.
The daily mileage reset button in the car is released. The control combination will start issuing diagnostic cycles, alternately indicating the internal auto code, VIN code, software version, dashboard number, etc.

Code A559 literally stands for “power off at terminal 30”. With such a problem, you need to test the battery and replace it:
|
B1330 (9330) |
This error occurs when a short circuit in the passenger door |
E204 |
K-CAN cable malfunction. A detailed diagnosis of the wiring connected to the control unit is required. If there is no malfunction in the electrical work, the microprocessor is subject to diagnosis for software problems. |
E714 |
A 3VE battery voltage is reported incorrectly. The problem may be a fault on the CAN bus. |
2ACB |
Malfunctions of the main relay or failure of the device. With such a problem, the car engine usually will not start. The user needs to check the operation of the device, as well as make sure that it is in good contact with the wiring and that there is no damage to the connector. If power surges occurred in the vehicle’s electrical system, the problem could lead to the legs melting. |
2A38 |
There is a malfunction in the Valvetronic system drive due to a broken wire or a poor signal. The problem may be the slow motion of the valve lift mechanism. First of all, you need to check the wiring, as well as the eccentric shaft controller. If the problem is the presence of oil in the device block, then this regulator must be replaced. |
2DEB |
There is a malfunction in the power management system, the problem is electrical and is related to the operation of the CAS module. It is necessary to check the wiring connected to the controller and carry out diagnostics of all contacts. |
2DED |
The literal translation of this code from German is “power management, inadequate quiescent current”. The problem must be sought in the wiring, to ring all the wires connected to the motor control unit. Also, the cause may be a generator or battery. |
2E83 |
Malfunction of the electric coolant pump. The engine control unit recorded that this unit operates with reduced power. The problem may be a failure of one of the relays or a malfunction of the pump motor. Most likely, a short circuit appeared in the winding of the device. It is necessary to test the node and its contacts, as well as the wiring. |
2E85 |
Malfunction in the pumping device of the engine cooling system. Lack of communication is reported, which may be caused by cable damage or poor contact of the pumping device with the mains. The problem may be the failure of the pump motor. |
