CUMMINS ENGINE ERROR CODES

 

 

Error codes or fault codes is a digital display of signals about the malfunction of the truck systems supplied by the built-in diagnostic module. As they occur, error codes are recorded in the engine control unit (“brains” on professional slang), which allows you to restore the error history and make the most complete diagnosis.

 

 

 

Fault codes are two types:

  1. Fault codes for electronic engine control (an error has been detected in the engine or control system)
  2. Information codes that give an idea of what happened to the engine or control system

In addition, trouble codes can be active (current) or inactive (irrelevant).

 

Error codes are displayed on the instrument panel while the machine is moving. They are displayed either with flashing indicators, cuddles, or, on more modern machines, on a digital display.

Indicator colors and names may vary depending on the manufacturer, but most often it is yellow, red and green and means a warning, stop, service.

 

A yellow warning light (WARNING) indicates the need to repair the malfunction as soon as possible.

 

Red color (STOP) must be understood as a stop signal. It indicates the need to turn off the engine at the earliest opportunity and leave it turned off until the fault is rectified.

 

The MAINTENANCE lamp does not indicate an error; it simply notes some technical aspects: water in the fuel filter, low coolant level, high coolant temperature, high air temperature or high oil temperature.

 

On modern cars, you can find out error codes yourself through the menu on the toolbar in the “System Diagnostics” section.

To check the DTCs of the electronic fuel supply system and the engine protection system, turn the diagnostic key to the OFF position and the diagnostic switch to the ON position. Turn the car key to the ON position. If there are no active DTCs recorded, the yellow and red indicators will not appear. If there are active trouble codes recorded, flashing lights immediately appear. The numbers of the fault codes flash in the following sequence: the warning signal (yellow) flashes first, highlighting the digit of the fault code. There is a short, 1- or 2-second pause, then the “Stop” signal (red) starts flashing. After a new pause, the warning light returns again. Thus, the change of signals and the digital display of error codes are repeated.

 

To see the next DTC, slide the switch to the “+” position. To return to the previous fault code, move the switch to the “-” position.

 

When you are finished working with the diagnostic system, return the diagnostic switch to the off position.
