BMW Electrical Faults Codes

How to diagnose an error?

BMW error diagnosis technology with OBD1 systems:

On a car with the ignition on, the gas pedal is squeezed five times over five seconds.

On the dashboard, when the test starts, the “Check Engine” indicator will light. The light will turn on for five seconds, and then turn off for half a second.

Then the indicator will turn on again for 2.5 s, and after a pause of 2.5 seconds it will start displaying trouble codes.

The most accurate options for checking a BMW car are using a computer or a diagnostic scanner. But to implement this method, the user needs to prepare in advance special equipment for testing or a laptop with software installed on it.

The algorithm of actions during testing using a tester or a computer:

The user connects the computer to the diagnostic output in the car.

The ignition is activated and the engine is started.

The laptop runs the software. If a scanner is used for verification, it must be turned on.

The testing process begins. Depending on the vehicle model, the firmware version of the control unit and the laptop program, or the scanner version, the procedure can take from several minutes to an hour.

Upon completion of the verification process, a list of errors found in the operation of the BMW car will appear on the screen of the laptop or tester. The user needs to decrypt these codes and, in accordance with the information received, repair the units and assemblies. After the vehicle is restored to serviceability, the fault combinations are deleted from the control unit memory.

Dashboard test for cars E36 1992-1999 years of release:

On the control panel, the daily mileage reset key installed on the odometer is pressed and held.

In the ignition switch, the key is turned to position I. On the dashboard screen, an inscription will light up indicating the beginning of the test - Test 01.

The daily mileage reset button in the car is released. The control combination will start issuing diagnostic cycles, alternately indicating the internal auto code, VIN code, software version, dashboard number, etc.

1B5102

General error code for electrics, it is necessary to look for short circuits

1d2404

Broken cable supplying the programmable thermostat. The device will not be able to activate at the right time, which will lead to insufficient cooling or overheating of the power unit. The cause of the problem must be sought in the wiring or poor-quality contact. Perhaps the thermostat itself is faulty, then the device will have to be changed. Also, the problem may be damage to one of the pipes of the cooling system.

213901

Literally, this error translates as "power management - actively reducing consumption." It is necessary to test the operation of the battery, as well as the fuse box. Possible short circuit on the contacts of one of the connectors.

This code on BMW E32 and other versions indicates a critical discharge of the battery, the control unit reports the need to recharge the device

6011

Internal error, exact fault not indicated. It is recommended that you start troubleshooting with the safety devices and relays installed in the mounting block. Perhaps the problem is the failure of one of them or a short circuit in the socket. You should also diagnose the microprocessor control module of the power unit.

7D / A1

Malfunctioning electric fan. It is necessary to dismantle and disassemble the device, the problem often is damage to the cable on the block connecting the device to the mains.

A0c1

Terminal 50 output failure. Check wiring and battery.

A559

Code A559 literally stands for “power off at terminal 30”. With such a problem, you need to test the battery and replace it:

  1. Visually check the battery case. It should not show signs of damage or defects that could lead to electrolyte leakage.
  2. Run a battery diagnostic test. If the battery voltage is critically low, it must be replenished by recharging. The discharge problem may be due to the destruction of the plates located inside the device. Fix such a malfunction does not work.
  3. Clean the terminal clamps. Often a power error is due to the oxidation of the battery outputs.
  4. Check the electrolyte level in the battery banks. If the working fluid is not enough, its volume must be replenished by adding distilled water. But you need to do this before recharging the battery with a charger.
  5. You should also diagnose the generator set. The problem may be the deterioration of the structural components of the unit or drive strap.

B1330 (9330)

This error occurs when a short circuit in the passenger door

E204

K-CAN cable malfunction. A detailed diagnosis of the wiring connected to the control unit is required. If there is no malfunction in the electrical work, the microprocessor is subject to diagnosis for software problems.

E714

A 3VE battery voltage is reported incorrectly. The problem may be a fault on the CAN bus.

2ACB

Malfunctions of the main relay or failure of the device. With such a problem, the car engine usually will not start. The user needs to check the operation of the device, as well as make sure that it is in good contact with the wiring and that there is no damage to the connector. If power surges occurred in the vehicle’s electrical system, the problem could lead to the legs melting.

2A38

There is a malfunction in the Valvetronic system drive due to a broken wire or a poor signal. The problem may be the slow motion of the valve lift mechanism. First of all, you need to check the wiring, as well as the eccentric shaft controller. If the problem is the presence of oil in the device block, then this regulator must be replaced.

2DEB

There is a malfunction in the power management system, the problem is electrical and is related to the operation of the CAS module. It is necessary to check the wiring connected to the controller and carry out diagnostics of all contacts.

2DED

The literal translation of this code from German is “power management, inadequate quiescent current”. The problem must be sought in the wiring, to ring all the wires connected to the motor control unit. Also, the cause may be a generator or battery.

2E83

Malfunction of the electric coolant pump. The engine control unit recorded that this unit operates with reduced power. The problem may be a failure of one of the relays or a malfunction of the pump motor. Most likely, a short circuit appeared in the winding of the device. It is necessary to test the node and its contacts, as well as the wiring.

2E85

Malfunction in the pumping device of the engine cooling system. Lack of communication is reported, which may be caused by cable damage or poor contact of the pumping device with the mains. The problem may be the failure of the pump motor.

2F71

Malfunctioning fan control ECU control electronics. This problem may be accompanied by incorrect operation of modules or software errors.

Possible causes of the problem:

  • a malfunction of the electric motor of the device itself, which led to a breakdown of the fan;
  • short circuit in the inner winding;
  • damage or clogging of the contacts on the device connector;
  • short circuit of wires supplying a fan;
  • deterioration of insulation on the control cable, which led to a change in resistance on the line.

28D7

Malfunctions in the communication system with the generator set. The cause of the problem may be a poor contact of the device with the mains or a malfunction of one of the components of the generator, for example, a voltage regulator relay.

43E2

Malfunction of the electrical circuit supplying the throttle actuator. The problem may be opening the wire or poor contact of the mechanism with the network. Perhaps the throttle motor itself is faulty.

44E2

Malfunction of the generator set. The cause of the problem should be sought in the wiring or the device itself. A problem may occur when the drive belt is worn or the tensioning rollers fail.

9AFF

Battery safety output activation system malfunctioning

9CB9

A short circuit has been detected on the malfunction indicator line. The problem may be a bad contact, but first of all you need to check the short circuit of the line to the voltage source.

P1057

Malfunctions in the electric motor of the drive unit for changing the valve timing. The problem is damage or a break in the power line.

P1619

A critically low signal is detected on the thermostat control line of the cooling system. If the thermistor sensor itself is intact, then the problem must be sought in the wiring. Perhaps the thermostat is jammed in one of the positions and this problem is not permanent, but periodic.

P1620

Critically high pulse detected on the thermostat control line of the cooling system

P1622

This control code reports an electrical breakdown or interruption in the power supply to the thermostat. Possible malfunctions of the cooling system, up to overheating of the engine.
